## Update Harvard-Managed Systems

The various schools and units within Harvard provide support for many systems through system management software. The best way to get updates for your Harvard managed system is through that software.

 ### Service Desk Calls

Local IT support helps keep your computer up to date and secure. No Harvard support service team will ever send an update as an E-mail attachment, nor will they have a vendor call you to install a file.

**If you are ever unsure about an unsolicited support call or email, hang up and contact your local service desk directly.**

 ### Staying Managed

If you don't have security software running on your computer, contact your local service desk to get it installed.

- **School:** HUIT Managed Systems
- **Windows Management:** SCCM
- **OS X Management:** JAMF

**Reboot weekly so your computer stays updated. Feel free to shut down your computer at night.**

## Update Self-Managed Systems

Harvard managed systems aren't the only ones that need to stay up-to-date. Software updates provide new and improved functionality while addressing known issues. Here are some great resources for keeping your personal systems updated and secure.

Did you know that many tech products have a "shelf life" known as the end-of-life (EOL) stage? At this point, manufacturers stop providing updates, leaving devices vulnerable to security threats and potential performance issues. Stay informed by checking the manufacturer's website for lifecycle details and consider upgrading aging devices to ensure continued security and functionality.

To enhance your tech safety, regularly back up data on older devices, and plan for replacements when necessary. By staying proactive about EOL, you can protect your personal information and enjoy a secure, seamless experience with your technology.
